Why South Wales Is Perfect for Family Holidays

11 May, 2018

Planning a family holiday in the UK but unsure where to go? Here are eight reasons why we think South Wales should be at the top of your list!

1. It’s the perfect destination for outdoor adventures

South Wales is guaranteed to bring out your inner Bear Grylls. There’s something to see, do or explore around every corner. From kayaking and rock climbing to lakeside picnics and horse riding, you’ll never run out of fun things to do.

2. History is everywhere

South Wales is brimming with history and has played a key role in some of the world’s most fascinating historical periods, events and industries. From Roman ruins and medieval castles to large dock systems and coal mines, you can see reminders of the region’s epic past everywhere you look.

3. It’s magical

Do your kids love magical stories and legends? Take them to visit King Arthur’s Stone on the slope of Cefn Bryn on the Gower. Legend has it the stone grew from a small pebble that King Arthur found in his shoe. Be careful where you stand, though! Legend also says that from time to time the stone gets up and goes to a nearby stream for a drink…

4. The coastal walks are epic

South Wales is home to some of the UK’s best coastal walks. Most of them are suitable for intrepid explorers of any age (just don’t forget to pack a picnic and your walking shoes).

5. It has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world

Last year, Swansea’s Rhossili Beach was voted in the top 10 beaches in the world. That’s right, there’s a little slice of paradise to be found tucked away in South Wales; one that beat off stiff competition from the best beaches on the planet!

6. Surfs up

Thinking about surfing in Wales? Oxwich Bay on the Gower is the perfect beach for you to build your confidence. Just don’t expect 6ft waves – you’ll need to head to one of the area’s many other beaches for those. If surfing isn’t your thing, Oxwich Bay is still well worth a visit during the warmer summer months. 99 Flake, anyone?

7. It’s home to a ginormous nature park

Known as the ‘green heart’ of Cardiff, Bute Park & Arboretum is one of the largest urban parks in Wales. The park covers an area the size of 75 football pitches (don’t forget the plasters) and includes plenty of attractions to keep the entire family entertained, including a woodland balance trail, sculpture trail and education centre. Best of all, it’s easily accessible from the centre of Cardiff.

8. Thrill-seekers love Oakwood

No visit to the region would be complete without a trip to the best adventure park in Wales, Oakwood Theme Park. Located right in the heart of Pembrokeshire, our fantastical fun-filled park is perfect for kids and adults of all ages. Will you dare to take to the seas onboard the Jolly Roger Pirate Ship or experience the thrill of riding one of the world’s best wooden rollercoasters?
