OAKWOOD WOULD LIKE WOODS
Oakwood Theme Park would like to invite anyone with the surname ‘Wood’ to take part in a special event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Megafobia – their famous wooden rollercoaster.
The Pembrokeshire theme park is planning a three-day celebration from April 30th to May 2nd for the renowned ‘woodie’, which has been voted among the Top Three rollercoasters in the world. As part of the celebrations Oakwood is hoping to fill every one of the newly-liveried silver carriages on the ride with people called ‘Wood’. Oakwood Theme Park’s Natalie Hunt said: “We have put together a really exciting weekend of activities and events to mark Megafobia’s 20th birthday. “We now need the help of the public to see if we can fill the entire ride exclusively with people with ‘Woodies’! Anyone named ‘Wood’ who volunteers to take part will get free entry into the park, and a special allocated time slot for their Megafobia ride,” she added.
Opened in 1996 and manufactured by the leading US company Custom Coasters International, Megafobia is close to a kilometre in length, and is 26 metres tall at its highest point. Famed as one of the wildest wooden coasters on the planet, Megafobia has been voted the best ride in the UK and the third best ride in the world by coaster enthusiasts from the Roller Coaster Club of Great Britain. In 2010 it was listed as one of the Top Ten rides in the world in a poll conducted for Cheapflights.com. With a maximum vertical angle of 55 degrees and 25 metre drops towards a lake combined with unique crossovers this twister has attained legendary status among coaster fans worldwide.
Chairman of the Rollercoaster Club of Great Britain, Andy Hine MBE, who has ridden 1,000 different roller coasters more than 35,000 times calls it a ‘modern classic’. ”Megafobia looks like a traditional ride but it has been cleverly designed to thrilling effect. The first drop passes close under a tree and gives a hint of what is to come. “The rest is a scream a second, and the thrills really do come thick and fast with a g-force of 2.75 and speeds up to 77kph,” he added. Set in 90 acres of spectacular Pembrokeshire countryside, Oakwood is one of the UK’s leading theme parks with more than 40 exhilarating attractions; including four world class rides to enjoy.
