THEME PARK SPONSORS TOP TEACHER AWARD
The boss of Oakwood Theme Park was on hand to present the Teacher of the Year Award to Pembroke School’s Chris Evans at this year’s Radio Pembrokeshire Local Hero Awards.
Clare Stansfield helped to present the award, which is sponsored by the Pembrokeshire theme park, to the geology teacher who was nominated by fellow teacher Angela Unwin.
Chris has been teaching at Pembroke School for more than 30 years and is set to retire in July.
We work closely with lots of local schools and colleges providing both a fun place to visit and a great ‘outdoor classroom’ for everything from mechanics and physics to leisure and tourism and so we were delighted to be asked to support the Teacher of the Year award,” said Clare.
“Chris contribution to education in Pembrokeshire for more than three decades is certainly an amazing achievement and we’d like to add our own congratulations and wish him all the very best in retirement – it definitely sounds like he’s earned it!” she said.
Speaking after receiving his award from Clare, Chris said: “The evening was a wonderful and humbling experience and I was honoured to have been presented with the award.
“I received it with great humility and felt it was a privilege to have been recognised in this way for work that I find so personally rewarding, in just trying to make a difference.
“I have been so lucky to have been allowed to teach with a great team of staff at Pembroke School and even greater students,” he added.
As part of her nomination for Chris to win the award Angela wrote: “He has inspired a generation and more through his enthusiasm, passion and genuine love of his subject.
“He is in touch with nearly all of his former students and many are now colleagues working with him in education in Pembrokeshire.
“There are currently at least 10 former students studying for a geology degree because of Chris Evans.
“I can think of no one more deserving of this accolade than Chris and if I am half the teacher he is I will be very proud,” she added.
