When you’re bending over backwards to create wonderful Christmas memories for the whole family, you can sometimes stress yourself out and lose the Christmas magic along the way. Rather than piling the pressure on yourself to pull something extravagant or expensive out of the bag for your family during the upcoming festive period, it can be best to take it back to the basics. Here, we’ve wrapped up our list of suggestions for making Christmas more memorable without overcomplicating it.
There’s no better way to stay warm and cosy on these cold, wintry days than by staying in, bundling under blankets and hosting an inexpensive Christmas-themed family film night. Heat up the hot chocolate, sprinkle over some marshmallows and settle in for the evening together. Choose from classics like Miracle on 34th Street and The Snowman or bring some newer films like Arthur or The Grinch into the mix.
Why not take the opportunity to plan ahead for next year if you find yourself with some spare time? Get each family member to write down an idea or two for activities you could all do together and put these in a hat or bowl. Then, you can go through them one by one and talk through which ones you’d all be happy to do. Some examples could include visiting a theme park, going to your local aquarium or having a day out to the beach. You might be surprised by the simplicity of the ideas or find out that everyone has secretly been wanting to do the same things!
One of the greatest joys of Christmas is undoubtedly the food. Whether peppermint tingles your tastebuds or gingerbread is your favourite festive treat, you can use these flavours to bake something delicious together. Look up recipes for gingerbread men, mince pies, Christmas cookies and Christmas pudding to find one that keeps everyone happy.
You can even skip the baking altogether and simply get stuck into decorating. Make it into a competition to see who can do the best!
Whisk your family off to a Christmas wonderland filled with bright lights, sparkles and plenty of festive food and drinks along the way. Local light trails are quickly becoming a popular family activity, which comes as no surprise since they’re the perfect way to spend some quality time together while getting into the Christmas spirit.
Stick to something a bit more traditional and head to your local theatre for a pantomime or Christmas-themed play. Check the show listings for something that everyone will enjoy, and then all you need to do is get dressed up to spend a few hours experiencing the highs and lows of the storyline being played out on stage.
