Oakwood names its School of the Year for 2007
24th January 2007: School children and staff at St Aidan’s VA School, Wiston, are celebrating today following the announcement that Oakwood Theme Park has chosen them as their School of the Year 2007.
St Aidan’s school was chosen out of 40 that applied to become Oakwood’s School of the Year. Staff and pupils at the school will now benefit from a hands on approach from the Oakwood team who will assist the school through sponsorship and fundraising events throughout the year such as sponsored walks, auction of skills and themed parties. Alongside this Oakwood will offer their skills in the form of helping with DIY improvements and providing staff for relevant talks and discussions.
The school’s proposal that won over Oakwood’s support was mostly written by the pupils, they praised their teachers who always came in with a smile on their face, they wrote letters about how much they love their forest school that has taught them to appreciate their woodland environment, how proud they are of the school’s achievement and explained what improvements their school needs.
The pupil’s list of priorities include: updating and refurbishing existing classrooms, improving the fencing around the bank of their playing field, adding protective guards to the rugby posts, smoothing out the currently bumpy playground and installing shelter around the playground from the rain. The younger children drew pictures of what they would like and their wish list included a trampoline, apple trees, Wendy houses and swings.
Managing Director, Paddy McNamara said: “We had such a great response to our call for nominations it was very difficult to choose just one school as there are so many worthy of support. We chose St Aidan’s VA School as our School of the Year because their proposal highlighted how much the children love their school and the effort shown by staff and parents to fund improvements was really impressive and we felt we would be able to help with some of their requests.
“The whole Oakwood team are looking forward to working with the local school throughout the year to raise money to carry out improvements as well as offer the variety of skills staff have.“
