Coaster fans celebrate 20th anniversary at Oakwood
More than 150 of the UK’s most fanatical roller coaster fans will be heading for Oakwood Theme Park in Wales next weekend (August 8th – 10th).
The Roller Coaster Club of Great Britain is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special weekend of thrills at the Pembrokeshire attraction.
Oakwood is particularly popular as it is thought to be the only theme park in the world where fans can camp beside the rides. The Park’s famous wooden roller coaster - Megafobia - is also a major draw.
Chairman of the RCCGB Andy Hine MBE who has ridden 1,000 different roller coasters more than 35,000 times says: “All around the world theme parks compete to build the scariest white-knuckle roller coasters of all but most spectacular doesn’t always mean best.
”Megafobia looks like a traditional ride but it has been cleverly designed to thrilling effect. The first drop passes close under a tree and gives a hint of what is to come.
“The rest is a scream a second, and the thrills really do come thick and fast with a g-force of 2.75 and speeds up to 75kph. We take our club to Oakwood every year since it opened and we still have as much fun on it today – it is a modern classic!”
Members of the Club will be able to ride Megafobia, during a private session before the general public arrive on Saturday morning.
On Saturday evening there will be a special ‘Mega-GLOW-Mania’ event where members are being invited to wear something that glows for an after dark ride on Megafobia accompanied by music.
Set in 80 acres of spectacular Pembrokeshire countryside Oakwood is one of the UK’s leading theme parks.
Megafobia has been voted the best ride in the UK and the third best ride in the world by coaster enthusiasts. The Park is also home to Speed which was the first beyond vertical drop ride in the UK and Hydro, the tallest, steepest and wettest ride in Europe.
