Theme Park hosts cross country

Oakwood Theme Park was temporarily transformed into an all-terrain running course for the Pembrokeshire Primary Schools Cross Country event last week.

The event attracted competitors from across the county with a total of 780 youngsters taking part at different age levels from 43 schools.

The race is run at the award-winning attraction every year and this year’s race proved particularly popular with competitors and spectators alike.

Oakwood Theme Park’s Marketing Manager, Stephanie Churchard, said: “We were extremely fortunate that the weather was so fine and it really helped attract a good crowd of spectators.

“We’re delighted to be supporting such a positive activity for youngsters in the county,” she added.

The course was laid by Pete Freeman, Dixie Tilley, Shay Buckley and Dave Rees with the help of the Oakwood Gardening Team

The race was run and officiated by volunteers from Pembrokeshire Harriers and Mary Immaculate school.

Organiser Pete Freeman said: "I would like to thank Oakwood Theme Park for once again allowing the use of the grounds for this the 18th annual  event

“It is still as popular as ever with the children, schools and the parents and we hope to make sure it continues to be just as successful in the future.

“I would also like to thank Ann Rabaiotti, Ann Freeman, Sue Roberts and Liz Rowland for their help in the race organisation and results, also Andrew Jenkins, West Wales Athletics Development Officer, who was really impressed with the event and number of participants.

Thanks should also go to the St. John Ambulance (Wales) for providing the first aid cover, and the pupils of Tasker Milward and Sir Thomas Picton who provided the "hares" for the course." .

At least 18 youngsters who had their first experience of cross country
in these races have gone on to gain Welsh International honours with the Welsh Schools and Welsh Athletics.
